Surviving stress without triggering mental illnessNote: I am not a mental health clinician. I am only a scientist. The advice offered here should not replace advice given by a qualified professional.
Hello everyone!
So it's the holiday time, and for many of us it's also the end of the semester, the end of a grant or project period, or the end of the fiscal year. All of these "ends" come with stress. It's well-known that stress can exacerbate mental illness-- for example, through triggering mood instability or symptoms of depression or anxiety. Thus, it is helpful to have some tips for handling stress in ways that are more conducive to health.
Here are some tips that have been helpful in my life.
1. Get enough sleep. First and foremost, getting enough sleep every night can help prevent your mood from becoming unstable (especially for those of us with bipolar disorder), and it can be helpful in dealing with anxiety. We can think and solve problems more clearly when we are well-res
Do you love stock?Hey photomanipulators and others who use resources as inspiration, reference, or other vehicles of creation!
Do you ever come across a wonderful piece of stock that sparks some fire of creativity within you, and when you do, do you tuck it away for use at a later date? Or-- are you like me, and you quickly fire up Photoshop (or your program of interest) and play around with it?
YES? Of course you have!!!
You've come to the right place.
Now . . . do you love Daily Deviations (DDs)? Do you love seeing them, drinking them in, watching others get them? What about getting them yourself? And how often do you suggest DDs to the gallery moderators, or Community Volunteers (CVs)?
Here's the key: Did you know that DDs are also given to stock and resource deviations? Yes, it's true! And, fortunately, we have 3 whole CVs dedicated entirely to stock and resources!  And here's the best part: They would love to have your DD suggestions.
If you love and appreciate the amazing work that our stock

March Deviousness:

Celebrating Deviousness - March 2015

In Recognition of Exemplary Membership and an Outstanding Spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community.
Introducing Sserenita
My name is Denise Maritato and I was born and raised in New York. I have been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil with the support and encouragement of my grandmother, a fellow artist. In 2005, I graduated with honors from The Pratt Institute with a degree in Communications / Graphic Design.
After college, I completed a two year internship at a fashion company in Manhattan NY where I designed clothing tags, labels and packaging for hand bags and accessories. I then went on to design balloons for Anagram International and finally found a home working for Amscan Inc. designing halloween costume packaging for the retail chain Party City.
In 2006, I met my wonderful husband Mark and we just celebrated 8 years togethe

She spotlighted amazing artists and and made a real effort to bring the beauty in the misunderstood, to light. While we will miss her on the team, it's no doubt that she'll remain within the community and go on to do amazing and wonderful things :)

  Valentine's Day Art Exchange 2015 Wrap-UpValentine's Day Art Exchange 2015 Wrap-Up!
February often signals the spark of new or lasting love, and this February was no different, marking the fourth annual Valentine’s Day Art Exchange! This year’s event was a grand success, with over 23,000 deviants sending over 130,000 valentines!
Not to be outdone by last year’s event, almost 10,000 artists created and submitted Valentine-themed deviations to the 2015 Valentine Exchange category, a nearly 50% increase from the number of artists who took part in 2014! We also saw deviants spread the love even more than in previous years, as over 65,000 deviants received a valentine.
We’re always happy to see positivity and good feelings withi

DA is not deleting accounts.Administrative steps are being taken to hopefully put a stop to submissions containing the rumor.
DA is not deleting accounts on May 21st. Nor is DA ever going to delete accounts on any future May 21sts. This is an old stupid rumor and should not be taken seriously.
In the very unlikely event that DA's stance on removing unused accounts ever changes, an official announcement will be made at hq. You are not going to be removed because you don't use your account a lot. You are not going to be removed because you didn't copy and paste the poorly written 'warning' to your journal. You are not going to be banned if you posted the 'warning' because you were genuinely concerned. You are only in risk of administrative action if it's found you are posting it just to cause a disturbance in the community.
Stop posting the 'warning' in your journal.
Do not post it "just in case".
You can help by telling the deviants you see posting the journal that it's false. Feel free to

There has been a lot of stir lately concerning HeartBleed and accounts becoming "hacked". The actual Heartbleed situation occurred almost a year ago and you can find more information about it on this Wikipedia page.

  Seniors Mentoring ProjectSenior Week
IntroductionAs part of Senior Week at projecteducate and dAseniors, I'd like to share a bit about the Seniors Mentoring Project (SMP for short). SMP is based at the seniormentors group on DeviantArt and aims to be a supportive path for deviants to get real mentor support from DeviantArt's Senior Members.
Origin and PurposeThe group operates such that Mentor Volunteers (Senior Members who have elected to join the Mentor team) may reach out to deviants on a one-to-one basis and provide instruction, detailed feedback, and constructive criticism. The group was originally founded in 2007 by cei- and is currently under the supervision of LostKitten.
SMP TodaySMP was recently revamped in the hopes that more Seniors would like to devote their time and knowledge to mentor other deviants as well as in the hopes that deviants would like to receive help and feedback from whom they believe are appropriate sources of this inf

Seniority on DeviantArt is that cool thing that gives a user a pretty medal next to their username. Today I'd like to shine a bit of light on what seniority actually means.
Before we dive into all of this though I'd like to start out by quoting :faq29:
"So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognize their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endeavour, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out above the many others who deviate to be reco

After my last journal I noticed the staff did quickly remove the "folder" portion of the friends API call.  Personally I don't care too much about that, I just wish they'd make some form of announcement when they change the API.  From a developer standpoint it's very difficult to tell why a particular piece of code stops working - whether it's something that went wrong on your computer or something DA changed.

Fella, Groups and Projects

Submit Journals Directly to #CRCommunityProjectsIn the past, we've required deviants to send us a note about their project and then as a group decide on whether or not the project should be included within our journal and gallery.  Usually, this took longer than necessary for the project to finally get approval or be declined, so we've decided to change our procedures a little.
Instead of sending us a note, we're going to open up our Journal for direct submission from members.  Now, don't go getting excited and submitting ALL of your journals to the group, because they'll still need to go through an approval process by the admin here at CRCommunityProjects.
What will be accepted through the Journal?
Obviously, we want Community Projects, but what exactly is a community project?  We previously defined it as:

Welcome to another Artist Showcase! This week's feature centers on CeloTheImpossible, also known to friends as Kris. This deviant was introduced to me by firefox2171. Since then, however, I have improved in my art and have also switched from just doodling random things to uploading digital art along with a few traditional paintings. One thing I enjoy nowadays to do on DeviantArt is encourage people; I know many people on the site have

Feb Book Club: End of Month Discussion
As I mentioned, the end of month discussion will be about translation and literature, and has nothing to do with the specifics of this short month's short story, although you should read it anyway because Murakami is wonderful.
If you'd like to specifically discuss 'Town of Cats' by Haruki Murakami, you can find a link to the story here and actual discussion here.

If you did listen to the beginning of Jay Rubin's New Yorker interview, he essentially recommends eschewing translations in favor of the original instead. Given that Rubin himself is a translator, it may seem odd that he wouldn't advocate for translation.
Q1. What do you think are the disadvantages of reading a translated work, even when it's as close to the source material as possible?*

About Project Porkchop
The DeviantArt Experience can sometimes quickly become the quintessential example of that most frustrating problem: too much of a good thing. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to peruse the thousands of submissions and postings of artistic innovation, creativity and sheer beauty that are generated everyday.

At a very early age when I was around 5 years old I really loved to paint with watercolour. when I got older I began using other mediums and started drawing and painting more from nature. "The Shelter Project" is an ongoing charitable project, that seeks teamwork in order to raise funds for animals in need- usually those who need rescuing, medical help, to be spayed or neutered, etc.,- animals that need food, shelter, ongoing medical treatment, and for animals who are waiting for adoption to a new home. The project does this, primarily through purchases of a wide variety of artistic works available, by Tea of Tea Photography.

Monthly Photography NewsletterFor many of us, there's a reason why we are photographers and why we choose to stand behind the camera. We have much more purpose there and we lack a desire to be seen (some of us) and we have no desire to be recognised by face, but merely by name. So what do you make of the Huffington Post's recent article revealing the Photographers behind many iconic images? Check it out here. You may recognise many of the photographs that the photographers are holding, but do you recognise the faces of the artists who framed them? Probably not. You've got the likes of The Beatles, the Afghan Girl, the World Trade Centres at the moment of impact and much much more. But we never really know who is behind those captures - until now. Would you like your face to be well known for the images you take? Lighting set ups for portraiture can often be very costly and whilst there is no immediate do-it-yourself solution there are some low-cost ideas out there. Most of the equipment that you need for developing your Photography hobby into something more can be sourced online or in local shops. You don't have to shop at 'studio lighting' or 'backdrop shop' for the proper gear. These simple tips will hopefully help you identify things a lot closer to home and a lot cheaper.

We (sortof) Have a New Emoticon Gallery!!
There has been much discussion over the fives years I've been emoting (and I know there was a great deal before that as well) regarding the organization of the Emoticon Gallery. Though implementing Add Media was anticipated, and we appreciate the ability of all of us to contribute to the available emotes in comments, its use of the emoticon categories and the inability to keep icons out of them has made a mess of things.

This has, in my opinion, contributed in large part to the lack of activity in the emoticon community. Most of us looked forward to (or depended on) browsing through the gallery for inspiration, concepts, techniques, and most importantly, like-minded deviants. I don't believe there has been a more helpful and pro-active group of deviants on the site. The feedback from and interaction with other emoticonists has been the one thing that has kept me coming back here during those years. Long story short, no gallery... no c

Yep. Pompousness. Unappealing name, right? Well, the fact is - on deviantART sometimes if you're working at a pro level you feel a bit out of place. Do you really want critique on the piece you've published in The New Yorker or the painting you sold in a gallery show to finance your new Maserati? You don't, right? Because sometimes a social network can be a place to showcase your stuff, not just to learn. Thing is? When you say that, you likely will get called pompous.

PE: Dos and Don'ts of Literature DDsDaily Deviations Week
Literature is just a small portion of DeviantArt compared to the Visual Arts, but it is just as mighty.  The libraries in our literature galleries are filled with epic poems, tales of fantasy adventures, space operas, curl up on the couch romance, six word stories and spectacular sonnets that will leave you mesmerized.  But it's not like they have neon signs attached to them that blink and say "Read me!"  Which means we have to wade through the other literature that isn't quite up to snuff.  And then the idea hit us.
Why not make a list of things that put up the red danger flag when we're reading lit?

Don't pretend like you don't know what we're talking about.  Imagine clicking on a link and finding one giant wall of text with no paragraph breaks or indentations.  Or maybe it's a poem full of high school hormones and teenage love cliches.  No wait, it's the story that af

Even though we're often thought of as community icons and public personalities onsite, the community of senior members is wonderfully broad - both in terms of our personal experiences and activities onsite, and our artwork. Below I've selected some work across various genres and media by DeviantArt's senior members to showcase how diverse we actually are. Some of these pieces are iconic in the DA galleries, but others are less-known or by people from long ago who you might have forgotten.
Since there are so many seniors, I've had to limit the number I could post in this article. For an extended sample, see This Collection or check the gallery at dAseniors!

  My DeviantArt storySenior Week
Hi, I'm pwassonne, the current manager of InternationalFAQ, and a Senior member since last summer. This is my DeviantArt story: the story of how a clueless French Internet newbie came to be... well, the deviant I am today.
I was not always into art. When I was in school, I didn't like art classes and I wasn't confident in my writing. I would sometimes write beginnings of fantasy stories (some of which I still remember, but would prefer to forget) but I never got past the first couple chapters because I had no idea what I was doing, and what sort of stories I wanted to tell. That was until I started using the Internet and discovered the wonderful world of fan art through a small French-language Pokémon fan website I had joined for its game walkthroughs. It was a dark and stormy night... or, much more likely, a merely cloudy afternoon, and I learned what fanfiction was. To my naive teenage self, fanfiction looked much easier to write than original stories (whic

  PE: A/M Interview - Nacura-GArt History Week

Tell us a bit about yourself and your style of Art!
I'm Nacura-G, a 16 year-old french girl. In my free time I usually draw in Manga style, because I fell in love with that kind of Art when I was a little girl. I draw lots of original art because I'm more into emotional or "psychological" drawings, and because I don't really know how to do that with existant characters, I don't draw fanart often. I feel like people these days tend to be really pessimist in their view of other people, so I try to draw my own characters, the nicest and the worst, showing their feelings and trying to make them look as human as everybody.
What first interested you to Art and what made you start to take it more seriously?
I started to draw when I was a little girl. At first it really was to kill time, to have fun... I guess it was a way to create and I loved to create things and characters. It has been just these "usua
Art History : The LensbabyArt History Week
What comes to mind when you consider the history of photography?
For many of us, we think of the camera body and how it has developed from a huge, stationary box into something that we can carry around with us. As a consequence of the portability of cameras, a lot of people nowadays have them, be the cameras point-and-shoot or D-SLR.
If not the body, then perhaps we think about the traditional darkroom process of photography and how it has developed into a more digitalised process with regards to editing and post-processing.
So, bearing that all in mind, I can't help wondering how many of us think about the lens. Are lenses destined to be third in the history of photography? Certainly for this article, camera lens seemed to be a last resort, partly because the lens involves a lot of science and technicalities that not many of us fully understand and appreciate.
Therefore, I am not going to talk about the history of photography lenses in this article. If you are
Knitting: The Marius Sweater- A National IconIt's no secret the Norway is famous for a couple things, doing pretty great in the Winter Olympics and knitting. Children are taught knitting in school and it is really part of the culture there. One of the most famous knit patterns in the world is a Norwegian design know as the Marius. The design is inspired by an even more well-known pattern called the Setesdal. The Marius pattern was created by Unn Søiland in 1953 and was named after Marius Erikson. Erikson wore many hats, he was an ace fighter pilot during WWII, a champion alpine skier, and an actor. It was in the movie Troll i ord that he appeared in the famous sweater that has now become a national icon.

A novice may not notice immediately, but the difference is that the Setesdal pattern makes a series of dots, or lus that continue down the sweater, while the Marius pattern does not. This
The History of SongwritingArt history Week
Songwriting is an aspect of literature that I think is a bit overlooked on deviantART, so when the Art History week came around I decided I would talk a bit about the history behind music, and songwriting.
It's an interesting fact that what is probably the first musical instrument dates as far back as forty thousand years ago.
These bone flutes are quite incredible if you consider how long ago they were made, and they show that some form of music existed - or at the very least, some form of communication through sounds.
Sometimes I wonder how music itself was born, and I can't help but think of birds - maybe someone trying to replicate it. But was their brain this evolved already, this capable?
Maybe there was just a broken bone lying around somewhere, and trying to get something out of it by blowing inside it, the sound produced amused its user and that's how music st
Blending origami and fashion design. Maori KimuraArt History
I have discovered Maori Kimura only a few weeks ago and have not been able to find a lot of information on her or her works (sadly, I dropped Japanese a long time ago). Thus, this article is going to be more of a feature of her innovative and inspiring work, rather than a true insight.

"With Japanese fashion there’s been this really strong association with art. Some of the Japanese designers were the first to show in art galleries and a lot of the designers collaborated with artists very early on"

Tarun Nagesh
Assistant curator of Asian Art for QAGOMA

As the name states, origami has been one of the major sources of inspiration in the process of creating these bags. Since it is already a very well known craft, and other community members have writen extensively about it, I am not going to review it here.

Baroque art: the basicsArt History Week
Baroque art is one of my favorite art periods. It encompasses so much raw emotion and incredible talent that it is almost impossible to dislike this incredible period within art history. It isn't my intention however, to try and define the entire history of baroque art and its entire meaning through this article. That would be almost impossible to do. Instead, I'd like to introduce you to some of the basics of baroque art so that maybe you'll be inclined to do some research and find out more about it!
In terms of placing the baroque period of art within art history, think of it as happening between the Renaissance and Rococo periods. The baroque period went on throughout the 17th and 18th centuries and was predominantly European in its origins with a large focus on the Dutch and Flemish regions. Historians have attributed many different meanings to the emergence of the baroque period of art. In many ways it was influenced by the Protestant Reformation<
A Deviant Interpretation of the Danse MacabreMacabre Mermaid, by Metalpug (Brandy Stark):

Death is part of the mortal condition, yet it creates paradox for the living.  Death is inevitable yet mysterious, abstract and tangible.  It is revered with awe and reviled by fear.  It is fed by a mixture of secular folklore and superstition and theological morality.  These tensions, of course, make it irresistible to artists, who have spent eons creating images of dying and death. One of the most popular movements expressing death occurred during the Middle Ages:  the Danse Macabre
This delightfully cynical movement was spawned in part due to the plague.  The widespread issues of massive death led dark humorists to describe eating breakfast with family a

Traditional Art Feature and Feedback Contest - Win Prizes!
Take a look at your favorite collections, browse traditional art gallery for brand new artworks or dive in archives to find beautiful pieces that capture your eye. Then, step back and take a good look at your findings. What is the thing in each work that speaks to you? Is it the work's concept or technique that attracts you? Or does its atmosphere or style take your breath away? Has the artist tried something new successfully? Write these thoughts down and feature them among the artworks!
This contest is about sharing artworks you enjoy and also thinking further about why you like a particular artwork. Read below the rules how to enter - you have about 5 days time to compose a winning feature!
The Rules
Create a journal entry with a minimum of 10 pieces of traditional art from different artists here in DeviantArt. Use thumbcodes to show the artworks in your e
All the Literature Educate!:new: Updated 26/02
Over the past few years, projecteducate has worked hard to provide educational articles for various art forms. Within literature, we've seen our fair share and over the past 2 years we've used our own group CRLiterature to manage these articles to ensure as much of the community can see them. However, sometimes we miss people and that's a shame because the articles we've written as a community have been pretty spectacular and still valid today.
So to help people pick up the articles they may have missed, here is a list of them all! This is a great chance for you to read what you may have missed, or tag your friends who may find them useful!

What not to say when suggesting a DDAs CVs we get a tonne of suggestions for DDs, and with those come a variety of assertions as to why the piece should be featured as a DD. Some of these, particularly those that focus on things extrinsic to the art, really don't help get the art featured at all. In fact, sometimes the given reason can hinder the process instead. Here's a breakdown of the most common, unnecessary things we are told.
"The deviant worked really hard on this piece."
This is one of the most common extrinsic reasons I receive in DD suggestions, and the reason why it is so common is also the reason it is a bad one: it applies to just about everyone.
All artists who are even moderately serious about their work put a lot of time and effort into what they create. Those that seem to create difficult things with ease have put a lot of years of hard work into developing those skills. If we were to give DDs based on hard work, we'd have to DD almost every piece on the
Common complaints about Daily DeviationsDaily Deviations Week
There are many recurring complaints and concerns within the community regarding Daily Deviations. This is absolutely normal, as Daily Deviations are a site-wide feature and attract a lot of positive and negative attention. This article aims to address some of the most common complaints we receive as Community Volunteers, and hopefully help answer some questions and concerns you may have.
General Complaints
Popular vs. Unknown
A common complaint centres on already popular art receiving Daily Deviations which means that ‘unknown’ artworks are not featured. Although this issue has been thoroughly addressed in Daily Deviations: It's always popular art!, it’s important to quickly address this issue once more. Every Community Volunteer has their own preference when it comes to featuring popular versus unknown art; however, as a whole, we are all atte
Community Volunteers Interviews: Part 2Daily Deviations Week
Community Volunteers can seem confusing, intimidating, or intriguing at times. The community tends to have many questions for them, and does not always fully understand who they are as people and what they do as volunteers on DA. In this two part interview we hope to answer and address some of your many questions!
5. What will you absolutely not give a Daily Deviation to?
I absolutely will not feature these:
Celebrity, Video Games, Screen Shots, or Anime "renders" .pngs, psds, or "editions." Just... NO! *grumpy cat face*
Premade backgrounds or Precut images without their original sources cited in the artist's comments area.
Heavily edited or post-processed photographic stock. As a personal preference, I believe the stock should be pure for the artist to edit to suit their needs, not smothered in vignettes, etc.
Basically, if it doesn't follow FAQ #809: What are devia

Howl’s Moving Castle 1
Howl’s Moving Castle is best known as the 2004 animated fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.
While it is as beautifully animated as all of Studio Ghibli's other films this was one of the few times Miyazaki based a film on an existing work. The film is an adaptation of British author Diana Wynne Jones’ 1986 young-adult novel by the same name and the first book in th

Collection: The Crowned Princes of Horses

Mythical or Magical the Crowned Princes of Horses
It’s a common error to refer to unicorns as “mythical” creatures, since they actually appeared in Greek natural histories, rather than mythology. Unicorns were thought to be very real, albeit well–hidden. They are possibly the purest symbolic essence of the cult of the “Majestic Horse,” usually being all white and reputedly only being in danger of being captured by virgin females. Whatever their magical origin and possible reality, they have long been captivating creatures in artists’ imaginations.
