DeviantArt.com will celebrate its 15th birthday in August 2015. While many online communities have come and gone during the last decade and a half, DeviantArt remains because of our passionate and committed community. In that time, we've celebrated many milestones, and it became apparent we were in need of a place to share our victories and our challenges. And since we want to move toward more complete transparency with the community, what better time to also showcas

Introducing theCHAMBA
:iconthechamba:
My name is Jeffrey Cruz and I'm a Melbourne-based Comic book Artist that goes under the pen-name of 'Chamba'. I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, back when I would copy images of Transformers from the back of the toy packaging. That year, my Love for creating art was born.
During my first year of University back in 2003, I was introduced to DeviantArt as part of class task to join an 'online community', something that was very foreign to me. Being part of DeviantArt had allowed me to open up my eyes to the variety of styles that existed beyond my own backyard and of the people who created such works. Throughout the years I've not only made life-long fr

#Fella - About: CommentingComments are an integral part of our everyday deviantART life - we communicate with each other through comments, give and get feedback, critiques, or have the most interesting conversation whose origin is one simple comment on a deviation or journal.
This article is all about commenting, including a few commenting tips and thoughts on commenting by fellow deviants, as well as some resoures you might find helpful for commenting.
Tips:
Keep in mind what kind of deviation it is you're commenting on, as there are different things to focus on in a visual artwork (e.g. colours, shading) than a literature piece (wording, grammar), for example. (DerangedSenpai)
You can use the "sandwich" technique for commenting: start with saying something positive, put negative comments in middle, and also end with something positive. (Sachi-pon)Be specific with your positive and negative statements. Don't just say "It's cute", but mention a reason why you think it's cute; w

   Updated Sta.sh API
We are happy to announce the release of an improved Sta.sh API. After many years the Sta.sh api had become a little confusing and was not keeping up with changes to its backend systems. We therefore decided to redesign parts and fix some of the confusing naming and behaviour.
These changes are versioned so if you are using version prior to 20150416 there will be no change in behaviour, we plan to support the old api for around a year.
Summary of Changes
The folderid and stashid fields have been replaced by stackid and itemid respectively, this change applies to all endpoints.
These endpoints were removed and their functionality is provided by newer ones
/stash/folder/stash/media/stash/metadata/stash/move/file/stash/move/folder
New endpoints to manage stacks
POST /stash/move/{stackid} - moves stacksPOST /stash/position/{stackid}

The great point of my metal-colored handmade is to make it look like jewelry but still escape from the price of a big weight. For example, a simple metal casket with ornament will be much more heavy then plastic or wood itself and I don't like it. Also, they will cost much more mone

When did you first realize that you wanted to become an artist?

Well, I think it was pretty recently, like in early 2014. As I said before, I've worked as a 2d digital animator and one day I had the chance to do some D2 backgrounds. That was when I realized that I liked painting a lot and then I started to practice on my own, studying color and technique.

The relations between monsters and kids are never anything less than endearing. Unless it involves guts. In that case we’re bound to confront a cold, hard truth that reveals monsters are sometimes far removed from childhood wonderments as seen in Pixar and that checking our closets before bedtime isn’t a bad idea. And yes, these critters exist - so before getting too comfortable; there is probably a room you’ve forgotten to fumigate with the ole monster spray.
Alright, it’s time to come clean: stating monsters exist is a slight exaggeration. In fact, the monster spray trick only works on children because they believe in this stuff. But that’s the point: kids believe in this stuff. They have a rapport with monsters and that’s something we couldn’t take away even if we tried. We’ve all been there – either afraid of the dark, of sounds

   What is Copyright?What is Copyright?
"Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights. Copyright is a form of intellectual property like the patent, the trademark, and the trade secret."

Fan art is a way for artists to express their admiration or joy for a book, movie, TV show, band, and so many other works of brilliance.
While some people are heavily debating about the legality and originality of Fan Art as such, it is the artists who put their own interpretations and hard work into the artwork.
Himeco is a young artist who devotes herself not only to the Fan Art genre but also to her own original Digital and Traditional artwork.
I have had the pleasure to interview Himeco for Artistle. Below the interview I'll also feature pieces of Fan Art, including some of Himeco's works.

It is a form of psychotherapy that encompasses multiple fields and form the bridge that allows health care professionals to reach patients who are considered very difficult to treat. Since its humble beginnings in the mid-1940’s, art therapy has continued to thrive between the boundaries of art, art theory, psychology and psychiatry.
What is it?
Art therapy has multiple definitions, since it came together from multiple origins. The most common definition combines its psychoanalytic roots and its behaviour-modification roots. Art therapy is defined by The British Association of Art Therapists as:
… A form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication. Clients who can use art therapy may have a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include, for example, emotional, behavioral or mental
Interview: Jill of All Trades PolyMuneArt in the Professions
1. Hello  Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself and what sort of art-related job(s) you currently do?
Hi there! I’m Mune, former CV of the Game Development category and 3-Dimensional category here on Deviant Art. I am also a professional 3D artist and instructor, been working in the industry since 2010. I like long walks in fantasy/sci fi land, cats and squids! La la la la
2. Have you had other art related jobs? If so, what were they?
I’m what my father likes to say, a Jill of All Trades actually! I have worked in the film industry as an editor/vfx artist and 2d/3d converter artist on several indie shows and one big budget movie (Harry Potter 7 pt 1). I have worked for newspaper companies doing 2d flash games/promotional stuff, I have worked for charities creating websites/posters and informative videos, I have been a 3d animation instructor for a college program, I have even worked for t
Art Merchandising with LoveArt in the Professions
Art Merchandise 101: What is it?
As artists, we're mostly all familiar with designing our works with the thought of it one day being displayed in print or poster format. So what can we do if we have bigger and brighter dreams for our works than them simply being limited to a plastic frame hanging above a desk? Art merchandising - turning designs into products other than prints - can be the next step for the artist looking to expand their design horizons and make some money at the same time. Creating pieces for products other than prints can be artistically challenging as well as personally profitable; many deviants have found monetary gain as well as artistic achievement through doing so. Thanks to a plethora of platforms including DeviantArt, getting started in turning your personal works into cool products can be relatively easy and straightforward. Regardless of whether you're a professional artist, an up-and-comer looking for

I'm not a lawyer. This isn't legal advice. My professional insurance does not cover this article. Also:
"The article does not constitute an attorney-client relationship, attorney-client privilege, or legal or practical advice of any sort. [Dongs.]" - haldron
If you're looking at a contract that's terrifying you or involves a ludicrous amount of money or whatever, please consult a local lawyer in your jurisdiction who can help you more directly. This is an article intended to gloss over standard creative contracts from the perspective of a contractor/employee and an employer, and to try and make you realize why you should probably use one - plus a few tips I've learned over the years on both sides of these contracts. Now buckle up and enjoy the read.
Introduction

The Videogame Industry - an interviewArt in the Professions
Hi from TheMaidenInBlack! This article will focus on the graphic part of videogames, since I'm lucky enough to have my own brother working in the industry - I'm totally exploiting him for our interview. :giggle: being a 3D artist means doing everything from characters (his favourite part!) to environment, which is from actual level development to teeny tiny objects. It's a really exciting, beautiful job and Marco's passion for it made me understand and learn a lot!
I'm using his DA handle for the blog, but he never kept up with his account so I apologise! He has a website, though.

Prettiness is a family trait.
Tell our readers a bit about yourself!

Today we'll channel our inner craftsmen and create fancy DIY photography equipment.

The displayed DIY gadgets are mostly basic, so it is possible that professionals already possess the them. But that doesn't mean a different approach will not boost your results. See for yourself!
The DIY Gadgets

Six tools for Product Photography Artists Tools
1) Seamless Background Paper
This is great for getting those blemish and crease free backgrounds to put your products up against. The papers are non-reflective, you can get it in a huge variety of colours, and they save you the hassle of ironing fabric backdrops especially if you just want a plain block colour look. You can find it on amazon in the USA here.

2) Seamless background curve
This is a luxury - probably something to invest in if you're really branching out into Commercial photography and making some money from it! But it's also a genius idea and gives you much more opportunity - more than you would get with a light box or tent. The 90 degree angle allows you to shoot at a wider range wit

   George's Traditional Art ToolsArt Tools
Hi my name is George-B-Art I am a Traditional Artist and, as you may have guessed, I love drawing! I'm here this week to 'help' you with some tips and advice about "how to choose and use tools" if your hobby is DRAWING.
Bullet; Blue I am often asked about the tools I use to create my drawings. Do I use traditional wood-cased pencils or mechanical ones? What type of eraser do I use? It would appear that many Artists have a fascination (and a vested interest) in the tools and techniques used by other artists... and I'm no different in that respect! So, what tools do I use?

PE: Tips for Blending with MarkersArtists Toolbox
Introduction
This article is to give some handy tips and tricks for blending with alcohol based markers (Copic, Pantone, Tria, etc). The majority of the article is demonstrated using Copic markers, but the techniques used can be applied to the different marker types.

Papers
Marker papers come in many shapes and sizes. The common ones are:
Bleedproof / Bleedfree Marker Paper - 70 gsm paper which is thin and has a right side and a 'wrong' side, often comes in pads of 50 sheets and is quite cheap.
Manga Drawing Pad - 250gsm paper which is thick and textured, often comes in pads of 10-20 or as single sheets, can be expensive.
Japanese Manga Paper - thick, but smooth, more designed for inks and screentones, but can be used for colour pieces.

Joseph Blake Parker's Writing Tools Artists Tools
projecteducate have interviewed JosephBlakeParker this week in order to find out more information about the Tools for Writers that he is working on. Joseph is working on a series of articles which have all been shared through DeviantArt so far and which will one day become a book encouraging  Anyone to become a writer.

About the Writer...
My name is Joseph Blake Parker, but I go by Blake and on DeviantArt I am JosephBlakeParker. I grew up between the United States and the country of Bolivia. During that time growing up, I had an insatiable appetite for stories in whatever form I could find them—plays, local legends, movies, books, comics. And I think the story that then influenced me unlike any other was Batman the Animated Series. It taught me many life-lesson about the sort of person I wanted to be—and through that, the power of story to change a person's life

Sew you want to be a seamstress.
Most of us, despite our devious natures, are considered to be a little old for Halloween costumes. The ones in the store can be a problem anyway - they aren't tailored for our personalities, and they're a bit too cookie-cutter (we're deviants after all!). We'd like to make our own pieces that fit our madness a bit better than tacky modern versions of Elvira.
Cosplayers do this all the time, and hard core fans of various franchises do as well. Star Trek and Star Wars fans can buy Simplicity patterns for their use, but if you're not a pro or if you need to make alterations, you might have questions about what you need and how to get started.
The first thing you need is work space.
I know that seems incredibly simple, but it's true, and you need a lot of it. Even though Frederick the Great expected his citizens to only clothe themselves with one yard of material througho
   Finding The ForumsArtist's Tools
Did you know that DeviantArt has its own forums? Well, it does! The forums are a great place to chat, see other artists' work, and advertise your commissions, requests and art trades!
So, how does one find and post in these forums? I will tell you. :D
Step 1: Finding the Forums
The forums are very easy to find! Simply go to the "More" drop down menu and click on "Forum".

Step 2: Choosing the Right Sub-Forum
If you scroll down on the page you are taken to. You'll see there are a lot of sub-forums to choose from.

So how do you find the right one? It depends on what you want. For this tutorial, let's say we're looking to ask people to draw something with DAMuro. One of

How many times has each of us thought that our postings are getting buried by others? Let's face it: there are over 32,000,000 accounts on this site, and 160,000 pieces are uploaded every day.
One thing to consider is where you're putting your work.
Don't I want to put it in the most popular section of the site?
Not really. I know that the first impulse is to put your work right where you think everyone's going to see it immediately. But with 160,000 works posted per day, if everyone posts it all in "digital" or "

Pirates, Wenches and Treasure ChallengeGreetings Castle Dwellers...
Our new challenge is "Pirates, Wenches and Treasure." For those of us in the northern hemisphere, we're looking at warmer weather now. Which makes me think of seas, ships, pirates and the mythology surrounding these. This concept offers many directions in which one can go to illustrate the challenge and NOTE you do NOT have to include one of each mention. I hope to see MANY of you play as we have great prizes to share with you. Here are the details:
:bulletred: The requirement for this challenge will be to show us a manip that includes a person. The idea can be a design type of image OR a scenic one but it MUST have the sensibility of pirates and/or wenches. Oceanic, beach, cave scenes are good. if you choose a design, the focal point MUST be the model. Really, the model should be the focus in either design or scenic. Many of these kinds of challenges tend to be very "movie" driven so if your model is movie inspired please DO NOT use the actual actors' in c

I'll Give Ya an Object Contest (OPEN)
I wanted to try something new, so why not a contest? The title is probably is one of the worst you'll ever see, but bby that's okay with me //wink
At first, I was going to stick with a "Draw my Character" kind of thing.. but man, that's just not my style hhh
So for this contest, I'm going to give you a completely random object (Decided by randomizer), and you must draw my OC(s) in a scene, with that object!
Example: The word is laundry basket. The drawing could be Hotaru riding a laundry basket majestically down a flight of stairs //shot
Anyways, everyone will get a different object, decided by a random generator, and a list of items. This way no one can copy each other hhh
I must warn you. These items are really really random, but hey, that's what makes in so fun
List of Items:

To Enter:
1. It'd be nice to tag people, and/or make a journal/poll about this contes
   [PAUSED] Trivia Contest/Giveaway:( (Sad):redalert:
The contest is paused, but will need to restart.
Without warning, the service I was using canceled my account. Apparently, there were too many entries. I'm very sorry for this inconvenience, but when I get things working again everyone may have to retake the quiz. There was absolutely no warning. I didn't even know I was on a trial, and I'm very upset with the hosting company. I will keep looking, but right now I can't seem to find a way to access any of the scores. I will see about contacting the site staff as soon as I can. Again, I'm really sorry for all this.
-Theo
UPDATE: I have sent the site staff an email requesting the reactivation of my account.
UPDATE 2: There is nothing I can do to obtain the scores. I will resume this contest as soon as I can, but it is going to be sometime in June due to school. I'm very sorry for this.
