Summer Contest: Women in WarAlright guys, here is the deal. I haven't done my yearly contest so here it is. You want to watch this journal keenly because the prize list is going to expand rapidly after today.
The subject is women in war. I don't see enough of this in military fiction at all, let alone on dA, so I'm running a contest for it. I want realistic, historically accurate portrayals of women's contributions to war efforts, be they soldiers or pilots, camp followers, auxiliaries, or on the homefront. There are plenty of cool things to choose from, from female ambulance drivers in WWI, the Night Witches of WWII, Jean d'Arc herself if you want.
Go check out Women Warriors if you really want a list but be careful, it might be too kick ass and overwhelm you.
The point is, women were all over war from the beginning of time. You would never find a camp that had no women in it, filling various roles, and it is absurd to say war just didn't affect them as

Celebrating Deviousness - August 2015

In Recognition of Exemplary Membership and an Outstanding Spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community.
Introducing DamaiMikaz
“My name is Damaris, but most people know me as DamaiMikaz. I’m a self-taught artist from the Netherlands and I’ve been making art ever since I can remember. When I first came to DeviantArt I was pretty much dragged here by my friends, that all worked on original projects. Up until that time, I was primarily a writer and traditional artist. It was DeviantArt that sparked my interest for digital art, and it didn’t just spark my interest, but the community’s willingness to help out people really gave me a good start.
It’s remarkable how easy it is to connect to people on this website over things as simple as original projects and learning how to do art. Following other artists was what helped me to spa

Coffee to the COREFor those who are upset about CORE, you're right. We should have made a more formal announcement when we released to express the new CORE brand and what it means to us and you, and if nothing else in the interest of transparency. More information about CORE to follow this week. But even more importantly, you will see the release of many new Timeline elements that will give you much greater transparency into DeviantArt's direction as a whole.
Let's talk about coffee for a minute. Cuz it's Saturday, and I woke up and thought about coffee a lot this morning.
I bought a Nespresso machine a few months back. Boy do I like it. I also like my french press. The thing is, Nespresso capsules cost $1.10 and make 1 cup, and I tend to drink two cups in the morning. When I wake up, and on the drive to DA HQ. I've had this theory that I should drink Nespresso on mornings that I work, and I should use the french press in the evenings and on weekends when I have more time. Because the nespresso sa
DeviantArt and Angry MobsDue to the nature of DeviantArt it is quite easy to perceive that there's "a lot of people" who are upset with any given thing, enough so that you could even believe that "everyone" believes the same thing.
I felt that perhaps the community would like me to explain how DeviantArt views these types of things.
First of all, DeviantArt, Inc. is extremely deliberate. We don't do anything accidentally. Everything that hits the community is the result of a team collaboration that usually take weeks or months to complete. And so when we make mistakes they are felt by a group here or by our whole team.
Things you should know:
First of all you must believe that our team is 100% motivated to ensure that DA is healthy, and that decisions we make turn out to be better than how things were before. Each decision is likely to affect different pockets of people, and so you will always see the group that's unhappy pool together. The happy group is happy, so they don't tend to band toget
Happy 15th Birthday! In April I wrote a post reflecting on my 15 years at DeviantArt, since the project began in April of 2000 and was launched to the public on August 7th. I went back and re-read what I wrote, and wow, speaking of audacious I'm pretty hardcore in this post. I write from my heart sometimes and then I hit post and that's that. So for our official 15th Birthday I wanted to re-share a link to that post:

And then today, I wrote this reflection for you as a toast & thanks for all the llamas:
Happy 15th Birthday DeviantArt! We are evolving, and soon we will be able to share exactly how you can be a part of our transformation, ensuring that the DeviantArt we all love grows stronger in supporting the visual & written arts for 15 more years to come! You will soon see us release many years of effort, repositioning DeviantArt from all we have learned over our 15 years of managing the worlds largest creator community.

Two simple steps for a happier art lifeI wrote an article on my other account :iconbahamutdawncreations: more of a rant but with some key facts about art jobs and studio work.
But I wanted to write something a little more aimed to all artists and a little less ranty (if that's possible for me lol. ). A very direct and simple but effective comment.
Practice All the time
Get thick skin

That's pretty well the best advice I could ever give someone in as simple as possible. There's no special ingredient or technique that'll make you instantly good except practice and it'll take years. Some faster than others, but everyone practices. There's no "i'm a master artist" button in life.
Social media has stemmed into you'll see the complaints more than the praise and this is the reality. It's both in the eyes of an artist and in social media in general. We as artists tend to focus on those negative, or what we feel is negative, comments before the positive. From the masters to the beginners I bet you'll see more "critiques

While on a deviation page, all you have to do is scroll down and look right until you see:

Copy and paste the thumb code.

And if you want it bigger:

If that's not good enough, you can play around with the size like this.. .

How to Improve Your WritingHow to improve your writing
In 2013 I wrote an article called How to get more views on your Literature. I wanted to give actual practical advice from people who know, writers established in the DA lit community. The article was (and still is) very popular and seems to have helped a lot of folks so I decided to tackle a different (but way more important question)... how can we make our writing the best it can be?
Because it's great to show work to your friends but self improvement, or working towards a goal (for a lot of us that's a writing career, a novel, publication, competitions etc) is a whole different thing. So I asked some of DA's finest to spill the beans and answer those commonly asked questions 'How did you get so good?' 'Will I ever be able to write like this?' and 'Hi, is this Dominos?' (wrong number).
In How to get more views... I promi

Stop the fade: Protecting your work.Traditional Art Week
You’ve just photographed or scanned your latest masterpeice and uploaded it to and the comments and favorites are rolling in. The image of your work is saved forever in digital form, but what about the work itself? How do you protect the original from a flakey, faded future?\
What follows are the basics with some *bonus* traditional artwork by your fellow deviants.

by marcellobarenghi
The number one cause of faded, bland paintings is light exposure. It’s common knowledge that light from the sun causes skin damage. In the same way, when light hits a painting it causes damage. This can result in yellowing, flakiness, or the dreaded color fade. Once bright magentas and fuchsias can fade to peachy beige in a few hours of direct sunlight.
Pencil, or paint. Oil, acrylic, tempera, watercolor; It doesn’t matter the medium. No work is immune to aging and discoloration, but t
Editing of infrared photographs using PhotoshopInfrared Photography
I would like to show you my way of editing infrared photographs using Photoshop CC and the NIK plugins Viveza 2 and Silver Efex Pro 2. I started about 10 years ago with infrared photography using a Fuji S3 Pro body and two Nikon lenses. Having not been satisfied with the endless exposure times, I bought a used Nikon D70 having taken lots of infrared photographs over some years. In 2013 I decided to buy a new Nikon D90 body and had it converted to 720 nm.
My newer infrared photographs are all taken with the Nikon D90 converted to 720nm by Optik-Makario, Germany. At the moment, I am using a 18-70mm and an 18-200mm lens by Nikon. I have used other lenses such as a 50mm, 105mm and even a 85mm Petzval lens too. Using anything other than the 18-70 and 18-200mm lenses make things a bit more complicated because I have to use the camera's liveview.
Now let's talk about how I edit an Infrared photograph...
Below is the original photograph fro
To Share or Hide - That is the QuestionCommunity Week
If DeviantArt asked
Do you want to share this art?
on every submission, you'd probably frown as you clicked yes. Complaints on the feature would probably outnumber those over the removal of the webcams.
But the site actually does ask you that every time you submit something.
In order to explain, I'm first going to provide you a link to spyed's article on this matter.

"Well, this is great! This will help keep my art from being stolen!"
Actually, no. spyed explains quite well in that journal article why precisely it isn't the best idea to discourage sharing.
But I can understand why some people want to hide their deviations, and why they want to restrict them to those logged in to DeviantArt. With that in mind, because I know there are many people who do want to use this feature, and newer members may not be aware that it exists, I'm going to show you how to do this, both on new uploads and en

We all become accustomed to certain things, especially the interfaces we're using when we access the site. You might remember former views of the site, and if you're feeling nostalgic, you can always take a look through the Timeline to see them again.
While there are many user scripts available on the site that can help to return the site interface to something you're more comfortable with, you might be interested to know that DA actually has something offered as a feature to everyone that allows you to modify your personal browsing experience to some degree.

   PE: What is Patreon?Community Week

More and more the icon and word 'Patreon'   is being seen across the site, but just what is it and how are Deviant Artists using the site? This article aims to just lift the veil on what it is and why artists want to use it.
What is Patreon?
Patreon is a site that is a way for artists to be crowd funded and have Patrons of their artworks. It is not limited to visual artists, musicians and any type of creators are welcome to create accounts.
Other crowd funding sites often have monetary goals that once reached production starts, however Patreon is a little different, it is a monthly subscription instead. Goals and levels are still available and it is up to the Creator to determine what additional items the levels of support give.
What would I get out of it?
It depends on the Creator, most visual ar

Surrealism as an Art Genre was a movement that flourished in the early twentieth century and aimed at expressing imaginative dreams and visions which were outside of rational thought and control. He is known on DeviantArt for his passion and insight with regards to Macro Photography and can be found on DeviantArt as MarcosRodriguez.

The Bio...
I've been working in a car factory since 2012. I fell in love with photography about 7 years ago, when my girlfriend gave me my first digital compact camera. I always did every kind of photography, for me it's a pleasure to take pictures of anything in any situation, my girlfriend sometimes says that I love my camera more than her... (that's not true), but what I like the most is Macro Photography.
The Gear...
Now I have a Nikon D600 as main camera body, I also

   An Interview with LDFranklinInfrared Photography
Meet Lindsay, an Infrared Photographer in the USA. She has been on DeviantArt for just over eleven years and agreed to be interviewed to provide us with some insight into Infrared Photography and in particular to find out more from someone who has converted their camera specifically for Infrared Photos!

The Bio...
I first got interested in photography 12 years ago when I got my first point and shoot digital camera. I’ve been hooked ever since! I started out teaching myself, but then took a few photography classes in college to hone my craft. I joined DeviantArt back in 2004. My day job is working as a preschool teacher, so photography is just a hobby/side gig.

The Gear...
My main camera is a Nikon D300. I also have a Sony NEX-3 that I use quite frequently because it is convenient and super lightweight! My infrared camera is a Nik
Fan Art Week - Call for ContributorsNews + Happenings

Hello   I would like to host a Fan Art Project Educate week from September 28-October 4 but to do that I need 2 things from you guys!

It's nothing big!  But hosting a week alone can be, so the first thing I need is some contributors.  Do you know a lot about Fan Art on dA?  Is there a Fan Artist that you are dying to interview?  Do you have some Fan Art specific tips and tricks to share?  Is there a new trend in Fan Art that you'd like to feature?  If you answered yes to any of those, please note me with your ideas :la:
The second thing I need is to know what about Fan Art you want to learn about.  Is there something confusing in the category structure?  Do you need resources on copyright?  Is there a Fan Artist that you want to hear tips from or have a featured chat with?  Something else entirely?  Comment here and let me know! :eager:

Special Uses Of Some WatercolorsTraditional Art
Hello Dear deviants!Love  I'm back again with some articlesI am a dummy! ! This time I'll be discussing about some special uses of few commonly used colors: WHITE, BLUE and YELLOW
So to ease your reading experience, I've divided this article according to the following index
WhiteBlueYellowA Word of Thanks
So here we GO!
As we all know that white is a color that is not very commonly used in your paintings, but this color has its own special properties that we all can use to make our paintings look more fabulous! So, what's so special about white? It is its property of being a really good mixer that can mix any two or more than two colors to create a number of shades! Only white has this property because all the
Painting With A Knife! (The Practical - 1)Traditional Week
                Difficulty Level: ★★★✩✩
In the last article, I talked about painting knives and the differences, and how to get accustomed with the technique. You may refresh the memory of the old lesson here Painting With A Knife!
Those were all the theories and tips. This time we will get to the actual thing — How to paint with a knife!

The knife can be used in various ways in a painting — to apply paints or to give fine touches, straight lines and many more. But painting an entire piece with a knife is going to be much more hard. Yes, it is true that no tips or tricks can give you the "Easiest way to paint with a knife". There i
   Little Red Riding HoodTraditional Art

Who hasn't heard of Little Red Riding Hood? It is the story of a little girl with a red hood going to see her grandmother in the forest... yet she must be careful of the wolf. This tale has inspired many artists, and I welcome you to discover some of the traditional artworks from deviants and the stories on the same occasion.
The oldest versions
Although the story has been told for centuries, the story has two main versions, one more positive than the other.
The first printed version is the French version from Charles Perrault (1698). There, Little Red Riding Hood goes with a pie and butter to see her ill grandmother. On the way she meets the wolf. Learning that she's off to see her grandmother, he races forward to arrive before her. There, he says he is Little Red Riding Hood to come in, then eats t
Drawing the Figure in InkTraditional Art
Hi everyone, I'm back again for another Traditional Art Week!
I've done a couple tutorials in the past, but this time I'm gonna change it up a bit with an article encompassing a figure drawing class I attended recently over the summer. I'm not sure what the term for this is... a Drawlogue maybe?
As you can probably infer from the title, I used primarily ink during the four week class; in fact, it was the first time I've been encouraged to focus on ball point pen in an academic setting.
So here we go!
The tools featured here are:
ball point penink wash and calligraphy brushsharpie marker
Day 1

This was my first time drawing the figure from life for an extended period of time (25 min) in about 5 years. For this drawing I chose to use ink with dry brush techniques to loosen up. When using ink, I like to use the wash (water with a bit of ink in it) to sketch in a gesture. The purpose of this is to get a handle on the volume
   Drawing the PortraitTraditional Art
Welcome to this humble overview which presents some thoughts on how to approach drawing the portrait.
Bear in mind that we won't copy the photo like in the photorealism style, instead we will use the reference as a guide and we will create our own vision of the subject. We will explore simple drawing, a more elaborated sketch.
So let's get started!

Choosing Reference

(It's essential to study and draw the head from life, but here we will focus on working from photo references)

This step is the most significant part. Let's take a look at some examples, bad ones and good ones.
(I randomly picked a well known face for our purpose, in this case the actress Charlize Theron)

Now we have our reference.
This next step is to make things a bit easier for the less experienced eye.
   Introduction to ACEOsTraditional Art
Wouldn't it be awesome to own a collection of original, handmade artworks from various artists?
Unfortunately having a large collection of big paintings or drawings is not often possible because original artworks and their shipping around the world cost money and they also need lots of space at your home to be presented in the best possible way. However, this does not mean you couldn't own a piece of art from your favorite artist: the solution is artist trading cards, also known as ATCs or ACEOs.
At the beginning of this article I introduce what these little cards are. To trading and creating ACEOs in DeviantArt us take the artists themselves by interview: The artists let us know how they started trading and what keeps them doing it. They also share their best tips of creating and trading these cards!
What is ACEO?
ACEO is an acronym that stands for Art Cards, Editions and Originals. ACEOs are variants of Artist Trading

   Interview with @GrotesqueDarling13Macro Photography
GrotesqueDarling13 is a passionate artist from Detroit. Her gallery is not only full of great macros but also a lot of other pieces of art from various mediums such as photography, drawings, artisan crafts and more! In this interview we get to learn more about her passion for Macro photography...
1.- What is Macro for you?
Macro to me is almost like stepping outside the world we see every day to really take in the worlds that are over looked more then they are seen. Its always an adventure, something beautiful is always waiting to be found.
2.- What made you decide to start Macro Photography?
I always found Macro to be interesting and so beautiful. I followed many Macro Photographers whose works inspired me to try it for myself. And when I finally did, I had fallen in love with it.

My Experience With a Macro Attachment
If you'd like to try macro photography but don't have lots of money to spend on a macro lens, or want to experiment a bit before forking out for new equipment, there are some easy and inexpensive options you can play with. The one I'm going to talk about in detail is my new favourite toy - a Polaroid macro lens attachment.

Sometimes you just know. From the first moment, you feel it in your heart, an almost magnetic draw. You feel weak with desire and you know that you’re going to surrender. You whisper, “Together, we will experience so many beautiful moments. With you, I will see the world in a new way. I want you. I need you. I must have you. Plus, you’re totally affordable and compatible with my existing lenses”.

And that’s the moving tale of how I met my

So we begin!
All Deviants, Staff, Seniors, and Community Volunteers are a part of this awesome, socially-artistic networking site where we can interact and help each other by critiquing, featuring, commenting, and collecting artwork or finding new artists by searching the cool, yet small, corners of the site. But with all this awesomeness, some or many of us are sometimes stuck in a situation where we become bored and shut our computers down or senselessly move our mouse pointer in a circular direction. To keep such events from occurring, and with such an amazing site in front of you, I'll be giving you some ti
Novels and Shorts - Plotting the Easy WayCommunity Week
Hi guys! My name's Forever-Eve, and I would like to talk to you about basic plotting tricks for those of you new to planning novels and short stories.
To some people, planning may seem like more work than it is worth, especially for shorts. Sometimes we have ideas that we're just so in love with, we just want to pour it onto the paper, even if we don't always know where it is going. And that's where we tend to get stuck. We look back and are either at a loss for where we need to go, or have dug ourselves into a hole. Or, in less severe situations, we finish and end up with plot holes, which as authors we may or may not catch before publishing.
So if you've never plotted before, how do you begin? There's so many suggestions out there, it can be overwhelming. Today, I'm going to list some of my favorites, and in what situations they can be useful.
Short, But Descriptive, Overviews
You might have an idea that you feel you just have to get onto paper

Green Square Bullet How long have you been on DeviantArt?
I have been here since January 2008, which makes 7 and half years. Half years are small but they’re important too. It means that I have been a Deviant half of the time this site has existed!
Green Square Bullet What does your username mean?
It is a name of a plant. It is agave in English but because I am a Finn there must be extra vowel hiding somewhere.
Agave is a useful plant too, it is used in a production of tequila! Sorry DA, even if you’re 15 now, you’re not allowed to drink tequila.
Green Square Bullet Describe yourself in three words.
Fun, friendly and fabulous.
And a very modest human being, apparently.

Green Square Bullet Are you left or right handed?
