Based on Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World © ~ The Shadow had perceived he had convinced The Dreamreader to exit The End of the World with him, the only exit he could construe based on a map made for The Shadow by The Dreamreader. Out of fear, the towns people avoid the water pond and the whirlpool, but The Shadow made the connection that it was the only exit out of the town and outside the gate.

The Dreamreader, however, decides to stay in The End of the World to be with The Librarian and to assist her to find her mind. Making this decision means that The Calcutec on the "outside" will continue to fade into his mind and lose any connection to the physical world. In his rental car parked at the beach he slips into a coma after letting The Granddaughter know where he is. She tells him she will put him into stasis to see if her grandfather can come up with a formula to reverse his condition. Read the book. It will make sense then.
