Project Educate - Dates and Information!Calendar and Info!
projecteducate was founded seven years ago by moonbeam13 and since then has been a project run by the Community Volunteer team. The group is aimed at providing educational information for artists who want to learn about all sorts of art genres or who want to contribute their own knowledge for others to read about.
Weeks are usually allocated in seven day blocks unless there is a lot to cover and for general weeks a Community Volunteer will take the lead and bring you seven days of awesome in the form of articles, features, chat events, interviews and maybe even a contest or two. The volunteer will share their knowledge about the gallery that they oversee on DeviantArt or if they are a Chat & Forums volunteer they will give you insight into how things work over there. But now we have more and more involvement from the Community and we have themed weeks, which give anyone the chance to participate!

The Pulitzer Prize - HighlightsPhotojournalism Week
The Putlizer Prize is an incredible award within the world of photojournalism. Its simplest definition can be find on Wikipedia, as the following: It is an award for achievements in newspaper and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions in the will of American (Hungarian-born) publisher Joseph Pulitzer, and is administered by Columbia University in New York City. Prizes are awarded yearly in twenty-one categories (I omitted the category each photo won within but it is easy to look it up if you'd like.) In twenty of the categories, each winner receives a certificate and a US$10,000 cash award. The winner in the public service category of the journalism competition is awarded a gold medal.
Through this article I'd like to showcase some of the most compelling Pulitzer Prize winning photographs within the field of journalism, and give you a brief background on each specific image
PE:How To Achieve Smooth and Clean LinesDigital Art
Hello everyone,
Since it's something many people struggle with while working digitally, today I will be discussing how you can achieve smooth and clean lines using digital mediums.
SAI Stabilizer Tool
Paint Tool SAI offers my favorite method of creating smooth lines with its easy to use Stabilizer tool that works with absolute ease and no need for complicated setting adjustments. It doesn't matter how shaky your hands might be, the stabilizer tool will still be capable of creating beautifully smooth lines for you.

As you can see, the stabilizer tool is easily accessed, and you can quickly and easily adjust the level of stabilization you desire. The lower the number selected, the least amount of stabilization is utilized, the higher the more. I generally leave the stabilizer tool set to the highest setting (as seen above), though I've found that sometimes if you're working with smaller brush sizes reducing the stabilizer

PE: Digital Art - What is Photomanipulation?Digital Art
For those who don't know me, hi, I'm Jade aka Aeirmid, and AbbeyMarie and I are your CVs for Photomanipulation. We're here to share a bit of our gallery with you, so buckle up! :XD:
First, what is photomanipulation?
Photomanipulation, or photo-manipulation, if you prefer, sometimes seems like it has different meanings depending on the person to whom you're speaking. For DeviantArt, the definition our gallery uses is, "the combination of two or more photographic images to create something new." There are many nuances, so let's look at the key terms:
Two or more: Photomanipulation involves elements from at least 2 photographs. Using just one photograph and drawing or painting over that single photograph is a paint-over and belongs in the Mixed Media gallery.
Photographic images: Photomanipulation is created using at least two photographs-- or parts (elements) from at lea
   Mixed MediaDigital Art
When compared to the other digital categories the Mixed Media category seems to be the main one that confuses people. Over the years, I have heard more definitions and explanations for what Mixed Media is and what it is not compared to any other category. So I am going to stop the confusion and chaos that surrounds Mixed Media! Today, I will be explaining what mixed media is, how to determine if your art is mixed media, and how using it can open up a new world of possibilities for your art.
Mixed Media
The Mixed Media category here on DeviantArt is for artwork in which more than one medium has been used. For example, in my artwork "The Bunker" as shown below; I combined digital painting, photomanipulation, and 3-Dimensional elements to create it. Due to the use of more than one digital medium I uploaded this piece to the Digital Art > Mixed Media gallery here on DeviantArt. Thus, for an artwork to be considered Mixed Media<
Vector and Vexel are NOT the sameDigital Art
Like many of you, when I first started to learn about digital art and the various digital mediums I only had DeviantArt and the internet to educate me. I had no idea what raster meant nor did I know that choosing to create an image in raster versus vector meant I needed to think ahead about the end result and use of my image. More than that, I had no idea a medium existed that while it looked like vector art it was completely raster based and shared the limitations of raster images. Needless to say, there was a time when I was very ignorant to everything digital. However, thanks to countless hours on DA researching, practicing, and learning; I'm able to pass my knowledge onto you. Today, I will be helping you understand why Vector and Vexel are NOT the same. Also, I will provide you with awesome examples of both as well as providing links on how to get started in either medium.

3-Dimensional: Getting Started as a 3-D ArtistDigital Art
Overview
3-D (three dimensions or three-dimensional) art refers to an object/figure in an environment, as well as the seemingly real appearance of a form that is drawn and/or painted to create a sense of real-life illusion within a 2-Dimensional (2-D) space.

There are three-phases in the creation process of 3-D artwork: tessellation , geometry , and rendering. First, models are created of individual objects using linked points that are made into a number of individual polygons. The second phase is when the polygons are transformed and lighting effects are applied. In the final phase, the transformed images are rendered into objects with very fine detail.

Getting Started
Getting started into 3-Dimensional art is the same as getting started with any medium; you have to start learning it. There are no shortcuts or tricks to becoming a 3-D artist. If
PE: Pixel Art - Definitions and ExamplesDigital Art
Hello  As a part of Digital Art Week I'm here to give you the breakdown of the Pixel Art subcategory.  So let's dive in!
Definitions
What is a pixel?
Pixels are the tiny squares that make up images on a digital screen.  Dictionary.com provides this definition: "the smallest element of an image that can be individually processed in a video display system."
So wait, if all images on our screen are comprised of pixels, aren't they all pixel art?
Not quite; Pixel Art is defined on DA as being created "using tools that do not produce automatic anti-aliasing".  In most programs (Photoshop, MS Paint, Paint.Net, GIMP, etc) these tools are the pencil tool and the paintbucket tool (with anti-aliasing/AA-ing turned off).  Some tools that automatically produce anti-aliasing include brushes, gradients, burn, dodge and smudge.  Basically if it cannot be done by hand with the pencil tool, it likely doesn't "count"
   Quick Start to AnimationDigital Art
Overview
Animation is defined as the ability to create an illusion of movement when static (non-moving) images are shown in a sequence. Digital animation is the process of creating animated characters, objects, and environments through digital means. One thing artists new to animation often are not told is that digital animation has all of the same elements that one would find in traditional animation. The only difference is that many of the techniques used in digital animation are customized specifically for use in the digital world. Also, did you know movies such as Monsters Inc., Inside Out, and Finding Nemo all are examples of digital animation. Well, you do now! I am a dummy!
Getting Started
Let's face it, getting started in any art medium begins with the individual. It is up to you to determine which medium interests you the most. You are the one who
New Group: DeviantSpeak!Today some of us CVs were talking about languages, and since I've forgotten most of the French I had learned in school, I had discussed wanting to learn it again. And thought, hey, what if we started a group to learn languages together? Apparently people thought that was a great idea, so I decided to go ahead and get started on making the group. Of course, I have no idea what I'm doing, since I'm just an idea girl, so I'm looking for people who want to help admin and teach a language. We'd also love to have you join as a member if you want to learn how to speak a language!
If you are interested in teaching a language you are fluent in, please send DeviantSpeak a note and what language you can help with!
Also, we would love to hear what languages you want to learn as well! You can leave comments about that here, or on the group itself.
I know lots of deviants out there speak languages other than English, and it would be great if we could all come together and be able to communicate
   Tidbits about Journals/Features.
"To Sta.sh, or not to Sta.sh?"
that is the question...
:flirty:
There are two (main) ways to write a journal!
1) The first one, we tend to use when we join dA:

(at first most of us do not know what Sta.sh is, right?!)

This is how it looks like when one works on it:

You publish it in 1 Step: Submit

2) The second one is Sta.sh

You find it above the first option!

And this is how it looks like when you open it:

You have a library of artworks and journals stored there. Yes, you can also store artworks in Sta.sh (Upload Files)

Gear In Review: A Contest [CLOSED]The Basics
Who doesn't need an excuse to buy something new and/or try something they've had forever and not got around to using? Or extol the virtue of their favourite tool? Not artists, that's for damn sure - we love to talk, gloat about what we own, and show off our ability to play with it! :pringles:
And so, this contest was born. With Nonfiction Week coming up soon at CRLiterature and projecteducate we want to get you thinking about the types of nonfiction writing you encounter in everyday life. A major example of this is the review, an opinion piece grounded in fact and personal experience - you basically try something out, then write about whether you liked or disliked it and why other people should buy/not buy it.
Guidelines
Almost everyone has, at some point, written a review; you probably wrote book reports or critical essays in school, and those are sort of like a review if you squint enough. Gear reviews are similar to b

Challenge - Week 7Challenge : Island Paradise & Not Distracting
Welcome to another edition of the #CSSChallenge!  A refresher real quick of how this works.  Check out our Archives to find the complete listing of all the themes thus far.  Pick a challenge and design a skin based on that inspiration.  It needn't be a literal translation, but something what it reminds you of or the color scheme, etc.  We've had several wonderful suggestions for themes so far and many more to come every week.
This is a joint project between CSS-Babes and journalcss, so it no longer uses the group specific tag, instead, tag your finished skin with #CSSChallenge to be added to our Weekly Challenge Collection.  I will showcase these in an upcoming post.  (we only have one so far!)  The challenges never expire.
This Week in CSSAnother week in review.  We didn't have any in the full CSS or Gallery Skin categories this past week.  I would recommend waiting on gallery skins, as we may expect an overhaul of the code once again as dA updates their site.  Keep up on the DeviantArt Timeline Updates to know what is happening that may effect the CSS community.
